update: i put a piece or two of lava rock into the jars i'm using to water propagate. My limp, nutrient starved rootlings perked up significantly! I'm really excited about this easy, inexpensive way to fertilize my little guys.

What an interesting idea. I should just dig it up, seeing as I live on one of the oldest volcanic rocks on the planet https://www.britannica.com/place/Karnataka-Plateau
